Leadership in Education

Leadership in Higher Education: A Path to Greater Racial and Gender Diversity final report

In 2003, with support from the Ford Foundation, the National Council for Research on Women undertook a project to explore the impact of leadership on diversity in institutions of higher education. The project was designed to identify best practices for enhancing diversity among students, staff, faculty, and within the curriculum; to identify leadership models provided by administrators and faculty that create and sustain greater diversity; and to analyze the institutional architecture necessary to support those practices. The analysis was to be based on the actual experiences of higher education leaders, their visions and strategies as identified in site visits to campuses and in the latest data and scholarship on diversity and leadership.

Join Professor Nannerl Keohane on Thursday, May 12th at 1pm EST for an important discussion on how female and male undergraduates at Princeton approach their college years, the differences in how they define leadership, and in their overall experience.

A recent study from the Steering Committee on Undergraduate Women's Leadership makes specific suggestions on how to support young women on campuses, provide them real-life skill sets and make their existing leadership more "visible." Many of the patterns observed in the report are common to other co-ed campuses and have implications for how women advance in careers after graduation.

Looking to Women in America for Solutions

*By Kate Meyer

Last week Valerie Jarrett, Senior Advisor to President Obama and Chair of the White House Council on Women and Girls, and Preeta Bansal, General Counsel and Senior Policy Advisor in the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, hosted a White House Webchat to highlight findings from the recently released report Women in America: Indicators of Social and Economic Well-Being. Here at NCRW we were thrilled to see Jarrett and Bansal advocating for the same policies and programs that are on our agenda.

Join NCGS on June 21, 2011 as we celebrate 20 years of NCGS schools leading the way for girls and STEM with Advancing Girls in STEM: An NCGS Symposium.  Returning to the site of our first STEM symposium in 1991, Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts, we will host an event that will highlight nationally-renowned speakers, present original research, and share innovative ways to engage and retain girls in the STEM fields.

And please join us, as well, the night before as we gather with the extended NCGS community-schools, alumnae, friends, and former colleagues-at Southfield School in Brookline, Massachusetts, to kick off a year-long celebration of NCGS' own 20th anniversary. Be on the lookout for more details about these events - we look forward to celebrating with you!
