Deborah Hopkins is Chairman of Venture Capital Initiatives and Chief Innovation Officer at Citi. Recognized for her leadership in driving client-focused innovation, she has supported emerging technologies and championed the advancement of women by ensuring sponsorship and advocacy to senior management. She joined Citi in 2003 and became Chief Operations & Technology Officer later that year. She was named Chief Innovation Officer in 2008. Based in Palo Alto, California, her mission is client-focused innovation. Before coming to Citi, Debby’s roles included CFO for The Boeing Company and Lucent Technologies. Fortune magazine has twice named her one of the Most Powerful Women in American Business.

Female longevity offset by gender gaps

That was the parallax view presented last week at an annual summing up by the National Council for Research on Women, a New York-based network of 100 leading U.S. research policy and advocacy centers, which held a panel here at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

Linda Basch, president of the National Council for Research on Women, pointed out women's larger share of poverty. "About 1.2 billion people worldwide--70 percent of them women--live in poverty," Basch said. "In the United States, the poverty rate of women rose to 14.5 percent in 2010, the highest in 17 years, so we have a way to go before gender equity is achieved."

Another disparity is domestic violence. While many higher-income countries have enacted laws, some developing nations still condone wife beating if the woman argues with her husband, refuses to have sex, or burns food.

Women's Studies As Civic Engagement: Research and Recommendations

Lynda M. Sagrestano, Ph.D. is the Director of the Center for Research on Women at the University of Memphis. She earned a Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of California, Berkeley and held NIMH-funded postdoctoral fellowships at UCLA and the University of Illinois, Chicago. Her research interests include barriers to economic self sufficiency for women, maternal and prenatal health, adolescent sexual behavior, teen pregnancy, HIV prevention, sexual harassment in school, domestic violence, and gender and work stress. Her work is oriented toward applying psychological theory to understand and intervene on social problems and advance theory development. She collaborates with individuals in health and community agencies, to highlight the role of contextual factors in health processes and outcomes, with the goal of taking a more integrated approach to prevention and intervention in the public health sector.

Since 1980, women have lived longer than men in all parts of the world. In low-income countries, women now live 20 years longer, on average, than they did in 1980. In addition, over half a billion women have joined the world labor force.

At the same time, however, girls and women are often still treated as more expendable.

Ever since she accepted the Girl of the Year Award in eighth grade, Tiffany Dufu knew that she wanted to make a profound impact. Raised in the Pacific Northwest, the daughter of a homemaker and a minister, Dufu was an early feminist who challenged the perceptions of adults around her who often insisted, “little girls can’t lead.” She knew that she needed not only to affect change, but also wanted to be public about it—so that other girls could be leaders, too.Now as President of The White House Project, Ms. Dufu is creating new programs to expand the organization with a focus to appeal to a broader audience while empowering women, not just in the political realm, but in society as a whole. She continues to be an active and visible member of the women’s leadership community, and was honored by Mattel in 2011 by being named one of their 10 Women to Watch. Under her leadership the future of the White House Project looks nothing short of success.
