Eco-Activism

Eco-Activism has deep roots in social justice movements around the world, especially feminism. Feminist thought leaders continue to identify societal and cultural factors that contribute to the current crisis in the global climate and environment. From Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, to Wangari Maathai’s Green Belt Movement, women have been at the forefront of efforts to adopt sounder environmental practices. Some have become active because of concerns about children’s health and well-being, such as MomsRising’s campaigns in the U.S. to ban toxic chemicals in toys. As caregivers for their children, families and communities, women are at the forefront of grassroots efforts for a cleaner, safer, healthier environment.

Celebrating Momentum and Milestones: A WEDO History of Women’s Organizing Toward a Healthy and Peaceful Planet

 What if we, as women, use this opportunity of the UN Conference on Environment and Development to be the change we want to see in the world?” This was the question women activists posed to themselves in the early 1990s, according to WEDO founding member Thais Corral of Brazil. “This was the starting point of WEDO: a group of friends, a group of women activists occupying a range of strategic positions around the world, trying to figure out how to innovate, how to collaborate – how to be the change we want to see.”

Forests and Gender

 WEDO is proud to present a new publication in partnership with IUCN, which takes a fresh look at some of the aforementioned issues facing gender and forests, and considers how gender is being addressed both on the ground and in policy discussions on climate change.

 
The publication includes case studies from around the world, demonstrating the wealth of learning and experience that is resulting from increased awareness and integration of gender issues within forestry work. It also examines current issues and progress at the international and global levels, and forecasts future challenges and developments. Click here to download a copy.

NEW Brochure: “Empower Women, Impact Climate”

 If climate change policies are going to be effective, women have to be at the negotiating table. Established in 2009 by WEDO, the Global Gender Climate Alliance (GGCA), and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) with the support of the Government of Finland, the Women Delegates Fund (WDF) supports the participation and leadership of women at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) negotiations.

Projects & Campaigns

Women's eNews and Global Press Institute are launching a one day gender justice and technology training event on Thursday, June 16 with the support of GoogleServe, the volunteer arm of Google, to empower women from the global diaspora living in New York.

Six women from the training session will become writers on retainer for a special series published by Women's eNews providing commentary and reaction on articles published from their country of origin by both Women's eNews and Global Press Institute.

Lucinda Marshall is the Director of the Feminist Peace Network (FPN) which she founded in December, 2001 as a virtual ‘room of our own’ where women concerned about how the impending U.S. invasion of Afghanistan (and later Iraq) would impact women’s lives could share their thoughts and ideas for action in a safe, supportive space. While initially focusing on militarism, the network, with participants from around the world, has expanded its vision to also address what Marshall calls the other terrorism, the systemic global pandemic of violence against women.

Women's Political Participation & Leadership

It’s nearly a decade since WEDO launched a Global 50/50 Campaign to boost women’s representation in political decision-making positions. Today, while the absolute increase is small, women’s representation in parliaments, now averaging worldwide at 18.2 percent, is the highest it has ever been.

GEAR Campaign 

The Gender Equality Architecture Reform (GEAR) Campaign – founded and co-coordinated by WEDO and the Center for Women’s Global Leadership (CWGL) since 2006 – has been advocating for a new, strong, unified gender entity under the United Nations system. The new entity, with predictable and substantial funding, as well as operational capacity at the country level, could truly improve the lives of women around the world.

Opportunities, Grants & Fellowships

Graduate Fellowships and Undergraduate Internships

Fellowship and internship applications (for graduate students and undergrads, respectively,) are accepted on a rolling basis. The duration of each fellowship/internship depends on the needs of the fellow/intern and WEDO programs, but a minimum two-month commitment is required. Fellows/interns will conduct research and writing, provide administrative assistance, attend meetings, and undertake other tasks as necessary, under the direction of the relevant programmatic staff.
