Increasing numbers of women are heading to business school due to a weakened economy, the flexibility the degree affords and an effort by universities to actively recruit more female students. According to the U.S. Department of Education, women received 44% of M.B.A.s in 2007, up from 39% a decade earlier, which translates to a 75% increase in the last 10 years

Scouting has come to New York’s private schools, a world known more for couture and expensive co-ops than for cookies and campcraft. Schools with newly formed troops include Chapin, Berkeley Carroll, Brearley, Dalton, Packer Collegiate, Spence and Trinity.

Scouting’s newfound popularity among the private schools, some suggest, is a reaction against life lived on the Internet.

For decades, M.B.A. programs have failed to attract a critical mass of female students, even as admissions offices scramble to target their recruiting practices at women.

The numbers of women pursuing business education remains low. While law and medical schools have nearly reached gender parity, M.B.A. programs admit only about 30% women annually.

Women M.B.A.s also lack professional mentors and role models in the classroom, where female faculty represent a minority.

Global Girl Media, an educational nonprofit founded in January 2009, aims to use the 2010 World Cup to empower young women by teaching them about digital media.

Its first project, called "Kick It Up!", will teach about 20 disadvantaged South African teenagers to report on the Cup, and will also encourage them to tell stories about their lives.

The girls will be trained by South African journalists, sportscasters, and established personalities in women's sports in all aspects of reporting, including blogging and video editing. The intent is to give the girls a new outlet, and a way to interact with their communities

Despite more women moving into business degrees, there is a continuing gender imbalance in the majority of undergraduate college majors.
