Ever since she accepted the Girl of the Year Award in eighth grade, Tiffany Dufu knew that she wanted to make a profound impact. Raised in the Pacific Northwest, the daughter of a homemaker and a minister, Dufu was an early feminist who challenged the perceptions of adults around her who often insisted, “little girls can’t lead.” She knew that she needed not only to affect change, but also wanted to be public about it—so that other girls could be leaders, too.Now as President of The White House Project, Ms. Dufu is creating new programs to expand the organization with a focus to appeal to a broader audience while empowering women, not just in the political realm, but in society as a whole. She continues to be an active and visible member of the women’s leadership community, and was honored by Mattel in 2011 by being named one of their 10 Women to Watch. Under her leadership the future of the White House Project looks nothing short of success.

Pathways to (Non)Profit

On June 23, The National Council for Research on Women’s Emerging Leaders Network and the Girl Scouts of the USA presented “Pathways to (Non)Profit.” This powerhouse panel included women who made the transition from corporate to non-profit careers and others who made their entire career in non-profit sector.

Getting to where you want to be in (non)profit

Navigating a career through the nonprofit sector may not be as easy as most people imagine. Once you decide to forgo the monetary bottom line to work for a specific cause or organization, you would think that doors would immediately open for you, and opportunities allowing you to work on behalf of the ‘greater good’ would be plentiful. Wrong. The nonprofit sector is just as competitive as the for-profit sector, with many individuals transitioning between for-profit and nonprofit work.

What are some of the pathways through and into the nonprofit sector and how can they be successfully navigated?

Our Opportunity for International Women’s Day

I took the helm at The White House Project at an interesting moment for women. Last week’s report from the White House, which Kate Meyer mentioned in yesterday’s post, coupled with a political, economic and social environment that is best described as extremely volatile across the globe, demonstrates how, on this International Women’s Day 2011, we are presented with a unique opportunity. 

We have the opportunity to be responsible.
