The Council is an alliance of nearly 100 leading women s research and policy centers that aims to influence public thinking and debate through accurate, evidence-based information and analysis. We at the Council have been increasingly concerned with issues that affect the workplace, including the issues we ll be addressing today in this panel.Violence is increasingly present in the world around us  on global and local levels  in our schools, in the streets, in the workplace and in our homes. As violence persists and grows, it is important for us to recognize the issue of violence in the workplace. We all know that the workplace is not a closed environment. The effects of violence that occurs outside of the workplace -- fear, stress, and their physical manifestations -- seep into the workplace in various forms, often creating a very uncomfortable environment for all employees. And violence that occurs in the workplace is felt in other realms of life. Yet workplace and domestic violence have not been addressed adequately as work/life issues, either by the research community or in companies, and so I d especially like to thank Working Mother Media and the two companies that you ll hear from today, Pearson Education and Verizon Wireless, for putting this issue on the agenda and making it a priority. Angela Schwers is Vice President of Human Resources at Pearson Education and an active proponent of WorkLife strategies. She has been helping employees balance their work and personal lives since 1993, by implementing a variety of programs ranging from flexible work schedules to on-site massages. Angela will present first. Our second panelist will be Martha Delehanty, Vice President of Human Resources at Verizon Wireless. Martha is responsible for all human resources strategy programs, including employee relations, compensation, training & development, staffing, diversity, and compliance. Unfortunately, however, inadequate research attention has been given to these issues by government bureaus like the Department of Labor and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and health, whose job it is to collect such statistics and to provide exemplary strategies for solutions. As you ll hear today, much of this research is almost a decade old. Legal Momentum, which some of you may know as NOW LDEF, has worked to develop company policies addressing the impact of domestic violence on the workplace, in collaboration with Liz Claiborne, Inc. and the Family Violence Prevention Fund. Legal Momentum has also published a pamphlet entitled  The Impact of Violence in the Lives of Working Women. Creating Solutions Creating Change, which serves as a guide book for employers to create policies that successfully address violence in the workplace, and includes an examination of legal issues that employers face in these situations. Another pamphlet provides advice targeted towards small businesses for handling issues of domestic violence. We have a few copies of both pamphlets here today. Legal Momentum also does trainings for businesses, is part of the Safe@Work coalition, and maintains a clearinghouse of information on law and legislation regarding domestic violence, stalking, and sexual assault and the workplace. And I believe Deborah Widiss from Legal Momentum is here today Deborah can you identify yourself in case anyone would like to ask you more about Legal Momentum s work after the panel? The Institute for Women s Policy Research has produced a report, calledMeasuring theCosts of Domestic Violence Against Women, on the costs of domestic violence to workers, employers, and society. The report can be ordered through their website. The Center for Women in Government at SUNY Albany has completed a study on workplace violence, in which they found women s risk of serious injury from workplace violence to be greater than men s risk.Business and Professional Women has done policy work on the SAFE Act, an act introduced in Congress last year to deal with insurance discrimination and other discriminatory policies against domestic violence victims at work. A few of our Corporate Circle members have begun to prioritize violence as a workplace issue. They re listed here in bold. These include: American Express, which introduced a workplace violence policy which emphasizes a safe, zero tolerance work environment. The company also co-funded the informational pamphlet  Creating Solutions  Creating Change, produced by Legal Momentum, and is part of the Safe@Work coalition. The Safe@Work coalition is a clearinghouse of information for employers to identify ways to handle domestic violence in the workplace.Credit Suisse First Boston  or CSFB  has a Dignity at Work Policy that addresses harassment, bullying, sexual harassment, name calling, stereotyping, racial slurs, and offensive jokes.
