1998 ANNUAL CONFERENCE
TRANSFORMATION THROUGH RESEARCH, ACTION, AND KNOWLEDGE
Thursday, October 1 - Sunday, October 4, 1998
Grand Hyatt Hotel, Washington DC
Keynote Speaker: Lani Guinier
The National Council for Research on Women is grateful to the following foundations for their support:
The Ford Foundation (Core Support)
Rockefeller Foundation and Open Society Institute (Global Exchange Initiative)
National Science Foundation and Alfred P. Sloan Foundation (Science Panels)
The Ms. Foundation for Women ("Fourth Wave" Panel)
The American Express Foundation and the Levi Strauss Foundation (Microenterprise Panels)
The Council's 17th Annual Conference in Washington DC from October 1-4 drew over two hundred activists, researchers, policymakers, educators, and affiliates from throughout the United States and abroad. This year's Conference focused on women's leadership; issues in the healthy development of girls; women's and girls experiences in the sciences, math, and engineering; efforts to achieve economic security and justice; and new frontiers in feminist research. Throughout, the Conference drew upon cross-cultural, cross-national, and intergenerational perspectives in order to more broadly elucidate transformations in research, action, and knowledge that have taken place over the past thirty years, and to initiate the development of a research and action agenda for the 21st century.
Program highlights included a keynote luncheon talk by Lani Guinier about women interrogating and confronting power; NCRW's First Annual Award Dinner for Women Leaders Who Make a Difference in honor of Donna Shavlik; and a panel of young researchers and activists -- the "Fourth Wave" -- who discussed the experiences and conditions that affect their perspectives, and the research questions and activist strategies that guide their work.
Panelists included representatives of NCRW member centers as well as specialists from a variety of local and global arenas, as well as five international scholars -- three from Africa and two from Eastern Europe -- who were inaugural participants in NCRW's Global Initiative, funded by the Open Society Institute and the Rockefeller Foundation. The Global Initiative was designed to build on the momentum of international conferences by providing an opportunity for women to share their diverse experiences and perspectives on current trends in women's research, public policy, and program development, as well as their strategies to mobilize and sustain collective action locally, nationally, and globally. Potential areas of collaborative research and action were identified, particularly as they relate to the impact on women of current processes of globalization and privatization.
Overall, 50 of NCRW's 77 member centers were represented; of these 50, sixteen were represented by more than one attendee. Additionally, several member centers were able to sponsor the participation of graduate students, thereby enhancing the quality of intergenerational dialogue. The publicized participation of the Global Exchange Initiative scholars also catalyzed the attendance and participation at the Annual Conference of several other international scholars and activists, including representatives from gender focal points within UN agencies, visiting scholars, and Hubert H. Humphrey Fellows through the Institute of International Education.
The program summary that follows details the participants, panels, and workshops.
