FAST FACT: The Human Face of Unemployment
The numbers abound: unemployment benefits are a healthy investment for the U.S. economy.
- The Department of Labor's multi-year report documented that for every dollar spent on unemployment insurance, economic activity increased by two dollars.
- The President's Council of Economic Advisors recently reported that if Congress does not extend UI benefits, 600,000 U.S. jobs will be lost.
- Moody's cheif economist Mark Zandi found that unemployment insurance is the second most stimulative form of government spending behind food stamps.
