By Shyama Venkateswar, Ph.D.*I joined a distinguished panel of researchers, advocates, and experts at the Yale Club on Thursday, January 19th when I presented our latest studies on increasing the access of low-income women to child care. The panel was led by Jessica Sager, Co-Founder and Executive Director of All Our Kin, an innovative Connecticut-based program that has had significant success in training child care providers and increasing the economic security of low-income women. To many of us, investing in child care is a no-brainer, but rigorous data from the Connecticut Center for Economic Analysis showed that for every dollar invested in child care, the state of Connecticut earned $15-20 in economic benefits. In other words, child care not only pays for itself, but has a significant multiplier effect on the economy and on our society.

By Shyama Venkateswar, Ph.D.*The National Council for Research on Women participates in the US Civil Society Working Group on Women, Peace, and Security. We are currently disseminating a statement and recommendations to encourage more robust US policies and programs to ensure that women's voices and organizations are fully represented throughout diplomacy, peace-building and post-conflict reconstruction efforts. In publishing this statement, the Working Group aims to transform declaratory support into concrete action and engender effective outcomes that bring peace, security, and dignity to the lives of women, men, and chiildren in conflict and crisis settings. Please help us spread the word about this important initiative. Click here to read the statement.

By Linda Basch, PhD*On Wednesday, I attended the 2011 Breakfast of Champions for an overflow audience at the New York Stock Exchange organized by the Women’s Forum of New York. It was an inspiring panel of “Champions” – CEO’s with at least 20% women on their Boards of Directors sharing insights about the difference women and diversity make to their companies.   Here are some highlights of what I heard.

In case you missed it…A major conference was held at Hunter College in New York to mark the 20th anniversary of Anita Hill’s historic testimony during the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings: Sex, Power and Speaking Truth: Anita Hill 20 Years Later. The conference brought together three generations of activists, scholars, and leaders to celebrate one woman’s courage to speak the truth when most politicians and the public chose to ignore her or attack her integrity and character.

By Alissa VladimirOn Monday, Oct. 24, the Emerging Leaders Network of the National Council for Research on Women hosted Taking the Wheel, an event featuring younger women who have founded or lead non-profit organizations. Held at the Ms. Foundation for Women and co-sponsored by the Third Wave Foundation, this eye-opening conversation featured two exceptional leaders in the non-profit sector, Emily May of Hollaback and Tiloma Jayasinghe of Sakhi for South Asian Women. Kyla Bender-Baird, Co-Founder and Co-Chair of the Emerging Leaders Network, moderated the discussion.

By Linda Basch, PhD, PresidentToday, I'm urging everyone in our network to contact their Representatives to denounce HR 358 -- a catastrophic measure that puts women's lives in jeopardy. I'm writing from Claremont Graduate University where our Western Regional conference passed the following Resolution:
