FAST FACT: Daddy’s Day!
June 19, 2009 posted by Kyla Bender-Baird
Sunday is Daddy’s Day! (Also known as Father’s Day if you want to be like that.) I love any excuse to celebrate my daddy (the man who not only taught me to drive but also how to cook and care for others—or at least he tried…we’re still working on the cooking thing). And my dad is in good company. According to the Census Bureau, there are over 64 million fathers in the United States.
For other fun Daddy’s Day stats, check out the Census Bureau’s special report here. Among some tired stats—like how many sporting goods you can choose from in buying your old man a fishing pole (ugh, my dad would prefer a new jazz CD any day)–there are also some norm-challenging stats I personally appreciate:
- 140,000: Estimated number of stay-at-home dads in 2008
- Among single parents living with their children, 16 percent are men
- 6: Average times children ages 3 to 5 were read to by their fathers in the past week, as of 2006
- 66%: Percentage of children younger than 6 who were praised three or more times a day by their fathers.
Also, don’t miss out on Deborah’s Father’s Day Round-Up over at Girl With Pen. I know I’m looking forward to the next WomenGirlsLadies talk at the Brooklyn Art Museum this Saturday (hint: the theme is Father’s Day). You should totally join us!
And this holiday post wouldn’t be complete without a shout out to Joe Kelley. Check out his latest at Dads and Daughters.
