MISSING from the Republican National Convention
On August 24, 2004, Miriam Pemberton from the Institute for Policy Studies reported on what Americans will be missing at the Republican National Convention, taking place in New York City from August 30- September 2. Dr. Pemberton states that, when talking about the budget, President Bush will not mention the post-election cuts his administration plans to make. In May, post-election budget plans were released, indicating cuts to nearly every government department, including several that will disproportionately affect women: Women, Infants and Children (WIC) will be cut by 122 million, Head Start by 177 million, in addition to heavy cuts to the National Institutes of Health and Social Security.

Many of the women recently appointed to senior government positions share a very narrow ideological perspective on critical women's rights issues. This perspective minimizes gender differences and advocates for the dismantling of many of the programs and agencies targeted at women and girls.

On April 25, 2004, the Feminist Press (NCRW Member Center) began selling advance copies of a book entitled The W Effect: Bush's War on Women. This collection of articles, edited by Laura Flanders, further explores many of the trends highlighted in MISSING, as it documents recent policy decisions that have adversely affected women.

UPDATE - NCRW Member Center Releases Report Slip-Sliding Away: The Erosion of Hard Won Gains for Women Under the Bush Administration and an Agenda for Moving Forward
On April 8, 2004, the National Women's Law Center (NWLC) released a report tracing the effects of the current administration's policies on women. NWLC charges that current policies are out of touch with lives of women and are responsible for dismantling hard-fought gains inwomen's advancement.
