MISSING: Vital Support for Women and Their Families in House Budget

November 7, 2005
The National Women's Law Center (NWLC) has been tracking Congressional progress on the House budget bill, which is expected to be voted on this week. According to NWLC, the House budget bill would cut $54 billion from "vital supports for women and their families, including Medicaid, Food Stamps, child care, child support enforcement, and foster care to help pay for more tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations." The NWLC is hosting a call-in week during the week of November 7 asking concerned citizens to call and e-mail Representatives and tell them to vote NO on the budget plan to cut vital services.

NEW: Senate Votes to Reinstate BLS Collection of Women's Employment Data

October 31, 2005
The Senate passed an appropriations bill that included an amendment to require the Bureau of Labor Statistics to reinstate the collection of data on women workers.

UPDATE: BLS Extends Comment Period

May 3, 2005
Heidi Hartmann, President of NCRW Member Center the Institute for Women's Policy Research, has asked all in the NCRW network to protest a proposal before the Bureau of Labor Statistics to discontinue collecting data on women in the workplace. We urge you to join her and us in this protest.

MISSING: Equal Pay Initiatives and Information

April 19 is Equal Pay Day, organized by the National Committee on Pay Equity, and marked by women’s policy and research organizations around the country. Women currently make, on average, about 76 cents to the dollar earned by white men. With recent changes at the Department of Labor, information and programs to address the wage gap have gone missing.

NEW MISSING: Realities of Women's Lives in President's Social Security Privatization Proposal
February 9, 2005
President Bush’s recent State of the Union Address outlined some key proposals in the coming years of his second term. High among these proposals is the privatization of Social Security, a proposal that does not take into consideration women’s unique experiences and needs. Several NCRW member centers are working to address this misinformation.

MISSING: Concern for Women in President's FY06 Budget
February 8, 2005
President Bush released his proposed FY06 budget on February 7, 2005. According to the National Women’s Law Center ( NCRW Member Center ), the budget would have a “devastating impact on women and their families by cutting supports especially important to them, including Medicaid, education, child care, family planning, housing assistance and heating assistance.”

MISSING: Government Refuses to Implement Law Securing Federal Contracts for Women-owned Small Businesses

November 18, 2004
Women-owned businesses represent 30% of businesses in the United States, and have been courted by political parties on all sides. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao has even noted that “today’s women-owned businesses are major contributors to jobs and the economic security of our nation.” However, the response by Government agencies, like the SBA have been less than stellar-- (privately-held) women-owned businesses received only 2.98% of federal contracts last year.

NEW MISSING: BLS Stops Collecting Data on Women Workers
November 18, 2004
On November 5, two days after the presidential election, the
Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) announced that it would stop collecting data on the number of women workers in the US as part of its monthly survey of 400,000 businesses.

UPDATE: NCRW Member Center, the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, Releases Report on Reality of Gender Wage Gap
On April 20, 2004, the Institute for Women’s Policy Research (IWPR) released Women’s Economic Status in the States: Wide Disparities by Race, Ethnicity and Region. According to the report: “At the rate of progress achieved between 1989 and 2002, women would not achieve parity for more than 50 years.” Women’s Economic Status in the States speaks to recent arguments that the gender wage gap “disappears” when taking women’s differing work patterns into account, or when looking at certain occupations. “[B]y viewing racial differences in both genders,” this report reveals “a much larger wage gap than earlier reports.”

UPDATE - Missing Information for Government Employees on Sexual Orientation and Rights
MISSING reported that, in February 2004, a newly appointed official of the U.S. Office of Special Counsel (Scott J. Bloch) removed references to sexual orientation from a website designed to educate government employees about their rights.
