NEW: Violence Against Women Act Expires
October 3, 2005
Despite House legislation to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) last week, the Senate failed to vote on the Act on Friday, leading to its expiration on October 1, 2005. In addition, amendments to House legislation were passed that will make cuts to programs for immigrant women and women of color. Mother Jones has more on the cuts here. The National Network to End Domestic Violence is also running a campaign to support VAWA reauthorization.
MISSING: Supreme Court Refuses to Hold Police Accountable in Enforcing Protective Orders Against Abusive Partners

By a 7-2 decision, the Supreme Court ruled on June 27 that police do not have a constitutional duty to enforce court-issued protective orders. Legal Momentum ( NCRW Member Center ) who filed a friend of the court brief in this case, stated in an email release on June 29 that the ruling jeopardizes the safety of domestic violence victims by “rendering the police blameless,” adding that “without proper police enforcement, protective orders are merely pieces of paper…”

MISSING: REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT SURVIVORS

The Department of Justice (DOJ) recently published a protocol on sexual assault, leaving out any reference to Emergency Contraception in the guidelines for rape.

UPDATE - Representatives Hilda Solis and Louise Slaughter Address the House on MISSING Information About Women
On June 22, 2004, Congresswomen Solis and Slaughter addressed the House in a special order speech on the administration's policies and practices regarding violence against women and reproductive health. In her speech, Congresswoman Solis stated: "American women have a fundamental right to seek public information that is clear, easily accessible, and not contaminated by ideology."

UPDATE - Still No Release of Governmental Reports on Violence Against Women
MISSING reported that the government's delay in publishing reports that it is obligated to produce under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) is affecting the case for important federal legislation on domestic violence and workers' rights in both the House and Senate.

NEW: MISSING - Key Information on Unhealthy Realities of Violence AgainstWomen in "Healthy Marriage" Proposal
While government agencies like the Department of Justice and the National Criminal Justice Reference Service are excellent resources for statistics on violence against women, the knowledge gained from this research appears to be "missing" from the Administration's "Healthy Marriage" proposal. This proposal puts women in danger, as it lacks provisions that take the prevention of and protection against domestic violence into account.
