Supreme Court Refuses to Hold Police Accountable in Enforcing Protective Orders Against Abusive Partners

By a 7-2 decision, the Supreme Court ruled on June 27 that police do not have a constitutional duty to enforce court-issued protective orders. Legal Momentum (NCRW Member Center), who filed a friend of the court brief in this case, stated in an email release on June 29 that the ruling jeopardizes the safety of domestic violence victims by “rendering the police blameless,” adding that “without proper police enforcement, protective orders are merely pieces of paper…”
