NEW MISSING: Concern for Women in President's FY06 Budget
February 8
President Bush released his proposed FY06 budget on February 7, 2005. According to the National Women’s Law Center ( NCRW Member Center ), the budget would have a “devastating impact on women and their families by cutting supports especially important to them, including Medicaid, education, child care, family planning, housing assistance and heating assistance.” As proposed, the budget would negatively affect the lives of women and children:
- Over 70% of adult recipients of Medicaid are women the plan proposes a $60 billion cut in this important program.
- One out of every three programs targeted for elimination is an education program.
- Funding for child care would be frozen for the fourth year in a row, meaning that 300,000 fewer children will get child care assistance.
- Funding for Head Start would be frozen and 25,000 fewer children will be able to participate.
