Busan Ulsan Gyeongnam Institute for Supporting Women in Sciene &Technology (BIS-WIST) has as its core vision to overcome economic, social and cultural barriers in society that place women and girls at a disadvantage and to promote international cooperation with NIS-WIST. BIS-WIST fulfills its mission by carrying out various programs that include supporting local women in scientific and technical fields and advancing the status of women in S&T and boosting their talents and skills to enable them to participate as full partners in building a science and techonology-centered society. Women's organizations, informal or well-established, have played a valuable role in raising the profiles of women scientists and engineers by bringing to light the problems they face. Informal small groups of women professionals have also influenced policy-making. To ensure the visibility and empowerment of women in science and technology in the Busan, Ulsan and Gyeongnam region, BIS-WIST supports various "small groups" of women scientists and/or engineers. The center will continue to offer career services, professional development programs and networking opportunities as well as policy research as part of Phase 1 of its development. However, in Phase 2, more emphasis will be placed on unlocking the hidden and potential talents of women across the region. Two of our main programs: CoSWoS (Customized Skills for Women Scientists and Engineers), aimed at strengthening the capability of professional women scientists and engineers and BEGIN (BT, ET, GT, IT: a New Start for Women Engineers and Scientists), a job-specific skill training for young and women scientists and engineers, will be expanded.
