THE CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF WOMEN IN SOCIETY
University of Oregon
Director, Sandra Morgen

The Center for the Study of Women in Society (CSWS), at the University of Oregon, is a multidisciplinary research center that generates, supports, and disseminates research on women and gender.  CSWS programs include research initiatives, grant and fellowship opportunities, events and sponsored projects, publications, curriculum and faculty development, and public education. CSWS works with the university community and with regional, national, and international networks to create conditions that facilitate excellent research and to make connections between education and research, public policy, and advocacy. A bequest from William B. Harris in honor of his wife, Jane Grant, a writer and feminist, provided initial support for the Center.

The Center fosters collaboration and interchange among researchers interested in questions about women; the intersection of gender, race, ethnicity and class; and feminist scholarship. The center currently supports three research initiatives: Women in the Northwest, the Feminist Humanities Project, and Women’s Health and Aging. It also sponsors a series of research interest groups (RIGS), comprised of collaborating scholars.

Sandra Morgen is director of CSWS and Professor of Anthropology at the University of Oregon. She directs the Women in the Northwest Research Initiative, which for the past five years has conducted research on welfare restructuring in Oregon . Based on this research they have worked to influence public policy directly and through community education and advocacy. Her most recent books include Into Our Own Hands: the Women's Health Movement in the U.S. , 1969-1990 and Work, Welfare and Politics Confronting Poverty in the Wake of Welfare Reform , co-edited with Frances Fox Piven, Joan Acker, and Margaret Hallock. Morgen received her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
