Dr. Mariam Chamberlain
Dr. Mariam Chamberlain is the founding president and resident Scholar at the National Council for Research
on Women. She is being honored for her role in catalyzing the advancement of women in higher education.
Dr. Chamberlain is an economist by training who has had multiple careers as an academic, government official
and foundation program officer and resident scholar. She served as a Program Officer in Education and Public
Policy at the Ford Foundation beginning in 1967. In that capacity, she was instrumental in developing the field
of women’s studies. While at the Russell Sage Foundation in 1982, she headed a Task Force Study on Women
in Higher Education where she helped found that National Council for Research on Women. Ms. Chamberlain
is on the board of the Feminist Press, the Women's Interarts Center, the Institute for Women’s Policy Research,
and the Network of East-West Women.
