Strategies for Women's Political Leadership and Engagement: A Roundtable Discussion

Location: Graduate Center at the City University of New York

Event Date: June 7, 2005

Speakers: Sarah Brewer, Emily Martin, Judith Saidel, Tracy Sturdivant, Ali Mari Tripp, Debbie Walsh

Moderator: Carol Hardy-Fanta

Points for Action:

  • Develop and recognize leadership in less obvious places.

  • Study international structures and the experiences/successes of women of color abroad and apply these lessons to women’s politics in the United States.

  • Organize women in the non-profit sector to encourage women to run for political office and become national models.

  • Engage young women in grassroots activism, ranging from organizations like the Girl Scouts and Girls Inc. to women leaving foster care to women in the criminal justice system.

  • Lobby state legislatures to stop night sessions so women don’t have to sacrifice family in order to run for office.
