New Directions in Global and Transnational Feminism

Location: Graduate Center at the City University of New York

Event Date: June 7, 2005

Speakers: Mahnaz Afkhami, Charlotte Bunch, Anissa Helie, Ida Susser, Deborah Thomas

Moderator: Irma McClaurin

Points for Action:

  • Develop strategies for identifying new frontiers for feminist research and activism. (Do we need new paradigms?)

  • Develop strategies for dealing with the appropriation of ideas, concepts, and strategies by right-wing conservatives.

  • Develop strategies for maintaining diversity while building coalitions.

  • Develop strategies to combat the “noveau” forms of patriarchy, racism, and post 9/11 globalization. (Are our analyses equipped to deconstruct these forms and offer ways to get people to think critically, or are we stuck?)

  • Engage in the idea of constructive difference and acknowledge its necessity; complicate culture and difference in productive ways.

  • Create strategies that truly take into account people’s history, people’s culture, people’s resources.
