The Women's Studies, Area and International Studies Curriculum Integration Project

Project Description | Workshop | Program | Participating Institutions

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The goal of the three-year Women's Studies, Area and International Studies Curriculum Integration Project (WSAIS)was to strengthen links between women's studies and area and international studies at the university and college level. Funded in 1995 by the Ford Foundation, the WSAIS project aimed to transform curricula by increasing the level of understanding of the uniquely local experiences of women around the world, and by exploring the gendered implications of recent global changes (e.g., the end of the Cold War; the emergence of newly democratized political systems; and the growing interdependence of national economies).

The National Council for Research on Women (NCRW) administered and oversaw this project, which was located on thirteen university and college campuses. While all the projects focused on faculty development and curriculum transformation, each institution had a unique approach to internationalizing the content of women's studies courses and bringing gender perspectives to international and area studies (e.g., summer institutes, intensive seminars, student internships, visiting scholars, mentoring opportunities) in order to fulfill project objectives.

To view the full program from the NCRW 1997 Conference: "Intellectual and Curricular Challenges in Integrating Gender and International Perspectives into Teaching and Research" sponsored by WSAIS Click Here.

A listserv, an NCRW-sponsored WSAIS Workshop in October 1997, and panels at professional meetings provided the opportunity for project directors to discuss practical, methodological, and theoretical issues that arose during the development and implementation of their various programs.
