Expert Profile
Dr. Michelle Segar is a research investigator at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the associate director of the Sport, Health, and Activity Research and Policy (SHARP) Center for Women and Girls. She is a recognized thought leader in promoting exercise to the general public. She has a doctorate in psychology and master’s degrees in health behavior-health education (MPH) and in kinesiology (MS) from the University of Michigan.
Translating “research into real life” is her passion and priority. Dr. Segar can speak to issues related to exercise, motivation, behavior change, gender-specific barriers, and facilitators to adopting healthy lifestyles and rebranding health-as-well-being as a key strategy to improve behavioral sustainability. She initiated the call-to-action for industry and public health to rebrand exercise as an essential strategy to achieve lasting exercise motivation and participation. Dr. Segar is frequently quoted in the media, and she blogs regularly. She speaks internationally to behavioral professionals, women’s organizations, and academics about how to make health behaviors more relevant and compelling to individuals’ daily lives to better promote behavioral sustainability.
