CENTER DESCRIPTION

The Center for the Study of Women, Science and Technology (WST) links issues in the study of science and technology with those of gender, culture and society. WST is the nation s first women s studies curriculum to bring together faculty and students to address issues of gender, science and technology in research and programmatic initiatives. WST is interdisciplinary, collaborative across Georgia Tech Colleges and in alliances with Atlanta-area colleges and universities and Georgia Tech alumnae, and cooperative in partnerships with students.

RECENT PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES


  • Lecture Series with annual theme (2005-06 theme:  Career Pathways, Transitions,and Advancement in Science and Engineering)

  • Annual Reception for new women faculty and staff and students and mentors


  • Focused Research Program. Research Areas include:
    • Educational processes and practices affecting outcomes for women in science and engineering
      Factors governing careers of women in scientific and technological fields
      Computing technologies that promote meaningful sense of control from women as well as men
      Social and biological influences upon the physical and athletic performance of women and of men
      Gender role orientation in adult development, including factors of job and life satisfactions, and coping strategies; and aging and cognition among women
      Historical and contemporary studies of women, architecture, science, and design
      Cultural representations of gender, science, and technology
      Gender and ethics in development and use of technology
      Inequalities by gender and race, on a global scale
      Studies of risk within science, medicine, health movement, and the pharmaceutical industry
  • WST Residential Learning Community, co-sponsored with GT Department of Housing, 48 Resident Students, plus 70 other participants, and 39 faculty Mentors


  • WST Student-Faculty Research Partnerships
    • GOALS
        Expand and enhance research on women, science and technology
        Establish and expand collaboration among faculty and between students and faculty through Center research and programmatic initiatives
        Enrich the national prominence of WST s interdisciplinary research programs
        Provide research-based practice and policy toward improved participation and performance in scientific and technological education and careers
        Support the instruction and development of students in the classroom and through partnerships with faculty in WST research and programmatic initiatives, and the WST Learning Community

        Link Atlanta-area researchers, entrepreneurs and technologists with shared interest in improving human resources for science and technology
