CENTER DESCRIPTION
The Institute for Women and Work is a program of Cornell University's School of Industrial and Labor Relations. The institute has four primary objectives: to develop and distribute applied research for policy analysis on the progress of working women in New York State and nationally; to generate educational and training programs to advance women's leadership roles in the workplace; to provide information to leaders and advocates that will advance women's policy agenda; and to create public forums, seminars, and conferences on special topics that pertain to working women's status and progress. The institute also contracts with several federal, state, and private organizations and unions to hold educational courses, applied research, and training on women's roles in the workplace.

RECENT PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES
Work and Family
Nontraditional Employment for Women study.
New York State Legislative Project.
The New Paradigm Project: Women, Men, Work, Family, and Public Policy. With a grant from the Ford Foundation, the New Paradigm Project offers an opportunity for faculty to interact with labor, business, and academic leaders. The institute organizes forums and conferences centered around work and family issues. The project includes a Working Symposia Series and Strategy Roundtables; papers, publications, and reports that update the status and findings of the project will be produced.
New Paradigm Symposia. Recent events in Washington, DC, have included "Flex Time in the Corporate Culture and the Role of Collective Bargaining, " held October 20, 1999, and "Unlocking the Closed Door Policy of U.S. Child Care: A Universal vs. Mother-Centered Approach," held December 1, 1999.
New Paradigm Public Forum. "Gross Domestic Product vs. Quality of Life," held October 29, 1999, in Buffalo, NY.
The New Paradigm Friday Breakfast Series. Planned programs in New York City include: "Flex Time in the Corporate Culture and the Role of Collective Bargaining," to be held January 21, 2000, and "The Changing Nature of Work and Family Life: A Focus on Men," scheduled for March 17, 2000.
