Making Macroeconomics Work for US: A Feminist Perspective

As the world experiences increasing inequalities and gaps between and within countries, women’s rights organizations are working to challenge current hegemonic systems and develop alternatives for change. Building on feminist economic analyses, the Center for Women's Global Leadership (CWGL) is undertaking the production of periodic briefs - Nexus: Shaping Feminist Visions in the 21st Century - to enhance women’s leadership for the realization of human rights. The briefs aim to both engender analytical and practical approaches to human rights in general, and economic and social rights in particular, as well as strengthen the capacity of feminist and social justice movements.

Brief Number 1 - "Making Macroeconomics Work For US: A Feminist Perspective" - highlights linkages between macroeconomics and human rights in order to better inform discussions about solutions to the current economic crisis in the United States.

Would Women Leaders Have Prevented the Global Financial Crisis? Implications for Teaching about Gender and Economics

Would having more women in leadership have prevented the financial crisis? This question challenges feminist economists to once again address questions of "difference" versus "sameness" that have engaged—and often divided—academic feminists for decades. The first part of this essay argues that while some behavioral research seems to support an exaggerated"difference" view, non-simplistic behavioral research can serve feminist libratory purposes by debunking this view and revealing the immense unconscious power of stereotyping, as well as the possibility of non-dualist understandings of gender. The second part of this essay argues that the more urgently needed gender analysis of the financial industry is not concerned with (presumed) "differences" by sex, but rather with the role of gender biases in the social construction of markets.

The Southwest Institute for Research on Women (SIROW) is a regional research and resource affiliated with the Gender & Women's Studies Department at the University of Arizona committed to developing interdisciplinary research, professional development, and outreach programs. SIROW conducts research on projects centered around women and gender in the Southwest and Northwestern Mexico, including education, employment, health, history, literature, culture, and the advancement of women and girls in science and engineering. The institute is connected to 30 campuses in Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Texas, Wyoming, and with El Colegio de la Frontera Norte and El Colegio de Sonora in Mexico.
