The George Mason University, Department of Sociology and Anthropology announces a tenure-track opening for an Assistant Professor of Anthropology, specializing in historical archaeology, beginning in the fall semester of the 2012-13 academic year.

We seek a historical archeologist specializing in the eastern United States, with particular foci including, but not limited to: African diasporas; plantation archaeology; warfare, conflict and battlefield archaeology; historical archaeology of the contact period; trade and economics; state formation; industrial archaeology; and mortuary studies.

The successful candidate is expected to manage an already established field school or to develop one. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a productive research and publication trajectory. The successful candidate must be competent to teach an introductory archaeology course; as well as advanced courses in archaeological methods, theories and issues. Ability to teach a large upper-division class aimed at nonmajors is preferred. Our undergraduate program includes offerings in all four fields of anthropology with many opportunities for collaboration across subdisciplines. Our graduate program offers a master's degree with emphasis upon advanced training in sociocultural anthropology; culture, health and bioethics; and transnational and global issues. Candidates will also have the opportunity to teach in the graduate program.

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in-hand at the time of application, and teaching experience. Women and minority candidates are especially urged to apply.
